Biography

Boris Rappo’s passion for music and image invites him to collaborate with directors, musicians and visual artists of plural sensitivity. Composing for narrative films, documentaries, commercial works, performance art and concert music each represent exciting opportunities for him to discover new musical paths. Collaborating with artists and supporting their unique vision by exploring new musical universes is at the very heart of his motivation.

Boris combines his classical and jazz training with a genuine affection for sound design and electronic music. Recently, he created and performed an experimental score for Ian MacInnes “Roommate” by merging elements of chamber music, electronic textures and psychedelic rock. In 2018 he composed music for Damien Ropero’s personal and commissioned video work for the internationally renowned fashion house Oscar De La Renta. During 2017, Boris worked with director Georgi Toshev on two Bulgarian national television productions: a documentary on the life of Geishas in modern Japan and a portrait of the artists duo Christo. He collaborated with Elena Rendina, scoring her videos for Japanese “Commons & Sense” magazine and Numero Magazine. In 2016 he wrote “Action Playing”, a string quartet performed in synchronisation with the video installation "Action Painting" directed by the artist Krefer. This project was commissioned by "La Fête du Slip" a multidisciplinary art festival in Lausanne, Switzerland on the theme of gender and sexuality. In 2015, he co-composed with Viroun Kattygnarath the music for the institutional project “Genilem L’aventurier du quotidien” directed by Anthony Jerjen. In 2012, Boris scored, Salar Shahna’s “The Bakery” (Rita Production) in collaboration with Nicolas Rabaeus.

In 2018, Boris obtained a master degree in “Music Composition: Film and Multimedia Scoring” from the prestigious New York University. During his time at NYU, he consolidated his jazz and classical training and learned to put them to the service of storytelling. At this period he was also selected to participate in the Society of Composer and Lyricist mentor program.

In 2015 he received his music diploma (Magna Cum Laude) from the International Music Educators of Paris where he attended music composition, orchestration, performance and improvisation lessons. In Paris, some of his work were performed by the IMEP Big Band and internationally renowned musicians including Jeff Ballard.

Private counterpoint and classical harmony lessons at the Schola Cantorum with Maestro Narcìs Bonet, composer and former pupil of Nadia Boulanger had a profound impact on his perception of music.

Holding a photography BA degree from the renowned art school of Lausanne Switzerland (ECAL), Boris learned the process involved in image production and presentation. This training helps him as a composer to communicate with film directors and dialogue with the conceptual and visual aspect of their work.

Retaining a strong footprint in Europe, Boris continues to explore new opportunities and international collaborations.
